Black Bull Threshing Festival returns to Sharavogue this August

The Black Bull Threshing Festival is set to return to Sharavogue on Sunday, August 23, with a packed programme of entertainment, music and traditional rural activities planned from 1pm.
First held in 2003, the festival has become a long-running fixture in the local calendar and is run with the help of approximately 180 volunteers.
Preparations for this year’s event began with the traditional cutting of the corn on July 17. The corn was donated by Philip Draper and cut by Kieran Garrahy, with Rev Canon Arthur Minion of Birr attending as special guest.
This year’s festival will be officially opened by well-known RTÉ broadcaster Marty Morrissey, while Anne O’Meara and Michael Hogan will take on the roles of Lord and Lady of the Threshing for 2026.

Live music will form part of the afternoon’s entertainment, with country music favourite TR Dallas and mother-and-daughter duo The Band Sí both set to perform.
There will be plenty happening across the festival grounds, with approximately 40 stands and attractions on the day. These will include vintage and craft displays, an auction, animal farmyard, pony rides, dog show, children’s activities, demonstrations and a variety of food and refreshments.

At the heart of the festival will be the traditional threshing mill, which will be in action throughout the day.
Those looking to get involved can also take part in a wide range of competitions and challenges, including Tug-o-War, Fittest Family, horseshoe throwing, pillow fighting, darts, bowls, the Hurl & Ball Target Challenge, Hanging Tough Bar Competition and Guess the Weight, along with a number of novelty games throughout the day.

The festival also has its own theme song, written and performed by Rachel Ryan, with local man Billy Jackson featuring at the beginning.
The annual event will once again have a strong community focus, with Coolderry Playground chosen as this year’s beneficiary. Funds raised will support the local facility for children and families in the area.

The Black Bull Threshing Festival takes place in Sharavogue, Co. Offaly (R42 E781) from 1pm on Sunday, August 23.
Admission is €5 for adults, with children going free, while secure off-road parking will also be available.
