Fuel prices in Offaly rise above €2

Tullamore Fuel Protest April 2026 (Offaly Daily)

Motorists across Offaly are once again facing rising fuel costs, with diesel prices now above €2 per litre in parts of the country and petrol also moving closer to, and in some cases beyond the €2 mark.

Local motorists have also reported prices around the €2 mark in parts of Offaly, adding further pressure to household and commuting costs across the county.

Figures published by AA Ireland earlier this month put the national average price of diesel at €1.94 per litre, while petrol stood at €1.87 per litre. However, prices can vary significantly between individual forecourts and have remained under pressure in recent weeks.

Fuels for Ireland previously reported that wholesale diesel prices had risen by around 11 cent per litre in the space of one week, with the increase closer to 14 cent once VAT was included.

For many motorists in Offaly, the impact of rising fuel costs can be particularly significant.

With limited public transport options in many rural parts of the county, thousands of people rely on their cars for travelling to work, school, appointments and other essential journeys.

Fuel prices were also the subject of protests and demonstrations earlier this year, with motorists, hauliers and other groups calling for measures to ease the cost of filling up.

The Government subsequently introduced increased temporary excise reductions of 32 cent per litre on diesel and 27 cent on petrol.

Those reductions are currently due to remain in place until the end of October, before excise rates begin to be restored on a phased basis.

With fuel prices continuing to place pressure on motorists, the issue is likely to remain a major concern for drivers across Offaly in the weeks ahead.
